Different Worlds

Different Worlds

You hear the phrase today
we live in a different world.
I happen to think it’s true
but maybe not for you.

It was the fall time of year
yellows were everywhere near
some a royal sounding name
goldenrod stood in every lane.

Then three things came together
braided hair the color of heather,
these gifts of nature ripe to pick
and no idea an impulse to restrict.

She sat in front and I gift in hand
hesitating, would she understand
how much she had caught my eye.
Frozen with fear I failed to even try.

It was not my intent to displease
then startled came a loud sneeze,
then again and finally recovered
as the golden rod was discovered.

“Oh no”, shrieked the lovely she,
“that’s golden rod.  It can not be.
I’m allergic can’t you plainly see?
Oh how horrible get away from me!”

Then the teacher would reprimand,
“Never, never ever do this again.”
Where is your good sense young man?
If you had a brain you’d understand
things like that are not for school
only for little boys to make a fool.”
